Moratorium please: Please pause powerful AI Experiments 🤖 overview

About the open letter titled "Pause Giant AI Experiments" 🤖

Are we headed towards a future where we have to bow down to our AI overlords? That's the question on everyone's mind, especially after Steve Wozniak, Victoria Krakovna, Elon Musk, and over 1341 verified leading AI researchers signed a letter to implore the scientific community to pause the development of AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4 for at least 6 months.

You can read the letter here: 📌 https://lnkd.in/gkzaXudA

We call on all Artificial Intelligence labs to immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 - from the Pause Giant AI Experiments open letter in Future of Life Institute, 2023.

As we all know, AI has come a long way in recent years. From self-driving cars to language translation, AI systems are increasingly becoming more human-like in their abilities. However, with "great power comes great responsibility" (Lamb, 1817) and that's what this group is concerned about.

The letter calls for a pause in the development of AI systems that are more powerful than GPT-4, and for good reason. As AI systems become more advanced, their impact on society becomes increasingly important. It's crucial to ensure that we approach AI development with caution and care. While AI has the potential to revolutionise the world for the better, it's not without its risks.

Is there a room for fiction on the potential danger?

One of the major concerns is the lack of control we might have over these systems. With advanced AI, we could potentially create systems that are too complex for us to fully understand or control. This could lead to unintended consequences that could have serious repercussions for society. Ok, like what? Security issues and criminal implications, education destruction, and other bad society implications.

The open letter implicates multiple labs, including those of the authors - The Neighborhood. Midjourney

Another concern is the potential for bias and discrimination. AI systems learn from data, and if that data is biased or discriminatory, then the AI will reflect those biases. This could lead to AI systems that perpetuate existing inequalities and further marginalise vulnerable groups.

So, what can we do to ensure that AI is developed in a way that benefits society? The first step is to acknowledge the risks and have an open and honest conversation about them. We need to ensure that AI development is done with transparency and accountability. This includes ensuring that AI is developed in a way that is inclusive and considers the needs and perspectives of all members of society.

Investments and ethics

Secondly, we need to invest in research that focuses on the ethical and societal implications of AI. This research should be multidisciplinary, bringing together experts from various fields to ensure that AI is developed in a way that is safe, ethical, and beneficial to society.

Lastly, we need to establish clear regulations and guidelines for AI development and use. This includes guidelines on data privacy, bias and discrimination, and transparency in AI decision-making.

As other exponential technologies (such as Metaverse, Blockchain, 3D Printer, etc), the development of advanced AI systems is an exciting and potentially transformative field, but it's not without its risks. We need to ensure that AI development is done with caution and care, and that it benefits society as a whole. Let's start a conversation about AI research and governance, and work together to build a future where AI is used for the betterment of society.

Bonus track

What happened to the "ship it now and fix it later" mindset?

Some people may argue that halting the development of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4 for at least 6 months would be a significant setback in the field of AI research. The development of these advanced AI systems has the potential to bring about significant benefits to society, such as increased productivity, improved healthcare, and enhanced communication and education.

That's why there are other point of views, that even Max Tegmark told Reuters that some people say "Elon Musk is trying to slow down the competition". In the same line, Reuters reports critics to Future of Life Institute (FLI), the organisation behind the letter, of "prioritising imagined apocalyptic scenarios over more immediate concerns about AI, such as racist or sexist biases. The Musk Foundation is a major donor to FLI". Pausing AI development may not address these underlying societal issues.

Finally, there is a risk that other organisations ("bad guys") may continue to develop AI systems during the proposed pause, giving them an advantage in the field of AI research and development.

Who needs caution and care in developing AI when we can just let the machines take over and hope for the best, am I right?*sarcasm*. The Neighborhood. Midjourney

For no AI labs people, let have a conversation and enjoy "a long AI summer"
